I literally started out at a small, 10,000 watt AM Radio Station in Northern Canada. No, really. Broadcasting was both a passion, and a foot in the door. To what, I wasn't entirely certain - probably something-something Hollywood-ish - but when you're young they always talk about getting a foot in the door. Granted, small town Canadian radio was a fairly small door, but it did serve to introduce me to my first roommate, collaborator and good friend to this day. As much as my goals were to progress in the entertainment biz, I was also looking for a way to migrate south. I moved back to my hometown of Edmonton, Alberta - which would only be considered south in relation to the northern outpost I started at. I worked as a television anchor and fulfilled a teenage dream of hosting an Afternoon Drive Radio Show. Soon after, I had a job offer to go even further south. In fact, as far south as possible in Western Canada - Vancouver. Also a much better foot-in-the-door place. The job: morning show host-executive. Then I got fired. Three times. From the same gig! Fortunately, the phone rang a couple weeks later with the offer of another gig, and another bucket list item - CHUM Radio. I spent over 12 years there, ultimately building my Afternoon Drive Radio Show to the #1 show in town with record ratings. Fun, but I felt more was out there. So, in the meantime - thanks to the advise of a crusty, old, amazing instructor in broadcasting college who drilled the importance of the 'typewriter' into me at a young age - I wrote. And wrote. And wrote. And took performance workshops, which landed me an agent, which landed me roles in TV commercials, which turned into film and TV roles, which gave me the incredible opportunity to be directed by the best of the best, including some of my ultimate inspirations: David Zucker, Tim Burton, and Robert Redford. (I still pinch myself, wondering if those gigs actually happened!) I started producing and directing my own projects. The feature Mockumentary, Hair of the Sasquatch, written by my aforementioned first roommate, Rodger Cove, premiered at the Calgary International Film Festival (2008). Two short films I directed had recognition at notable festivals, including the Montreal World Film Festival, the Toronto Independent Film Festival, the NYC Downtown Short Film Festival in New York, and the Sound of Silent Film Festival in Chicago. My first short inspired the feature script, Panda Boy, which I co-wrote and am producing with development funding from Telefilm Canada. I've had several writing projects optioned by some very cool production companies, including the TV cop dramedy, Minutiae, which received development funding from the Canada Media Fund. I've directed multiple TV commercials and corporate projects, collaborated with another writing and producing partner on the TV script, Going for Broke, which was eventually funded by Telus Storyhive as a web pilot. We produced the feature film, Woodland, which premiered at the Whistler Film Festival (2018), won for Outstanding Achievement in editing at the Newport Beach Film Festival (2019) and has been released internationally in over 20 countries. We currently have multiple projects in development, including the inspiration biopic, Behind the Screen about musician Abbie Conant; two feature crime thrillers - With the Wolves, directed by Juan Riedinger, and Blood Moon; The Pulpit, a TV drama about a politically active televangelist; three documentaries, including Aging Out about the foster care system in North America, and a couple of exciting docuseries. My goals are to continue working with great people on projects that entertain, inspire, and provoke thought, while equally balancing creative and commercial success ("show" + "business") in the ever-growing world of media in the twenty-first century, while "typewriter" remains the foundation for it all.
